June 12, 2017 (Calgary) –Alberta must act quickly if we want to take advantage of the opportunity to become part of the rapidly-growing field of autonomous vehicle technologies, says Alberta Party leader Greg Clark.

“Today I wrote to the Minister of Transportation asking that he expedite the regulatory changes required to enable testing of autonomous vehicles on Alberta’s roads,” said Clark. “This is a tremendous economic development opportunity, but only if we act quickly.” The letter may be found here.

Clark said Alberta’s climate, terrain and our highly-skilled and entrepreneurial workforce mean we should be a world-leader in emerging technologies like autonomous vehicles.

“There’s no question Alberta can lead in this area. We have excellent universities and a strong culture of entrepreneurship and innovation,” said Clark. “If we consider both sides of this equation, it will be Alberta entrepreneurs driving innovation and growth in emerging areas, and creating the jobs of tomorrow.”

“This is a highly-competitive area, so it’s important we act quickly. I look forward to hearing the debate at Calgary City Council today and hope our provincial government responds quickly with the regulatory changes necessary to enable autonomous vehicle testing on Alberta roads.”
