31 May Clark passes Bill 17 amendment to improve job-protected leave

May 31, 2017 (Edmonton) Alberta Party Leader Greg Clark has passed an amendment to Bill 17 that ensures employers have reasonable notice from employees returning from protected leave.

“This policy protects both employers and employees,” said Clark. “We need to ensure that this legislation is fair to all parties involved. When employees take a longer period of leave employers will likely hire a temporary replacement, the temporary employee will need reasonable notice when the permanent employee returns to work.”

“Increasing the notice period from two days to one week ensures Employment Standards are fair for employers and both permanent and temporary employees.”

“I’m strongly in favour of protected leave for employees, and I’m glad the government accepted my amendment. I continue to have questions about some of the extensive Labour Code changes and I will be presenting further amendments in an attempt to strengthen the bill.”
