May 9, 2018 (Edmonton) – The Alberta Party Caucus is calling on the government to live up to commitments they have made to tackle racism in Alberta. A report by Minister of Education David Eggen was due last fall but hasn’t been delivered.
“The government’s lack of action on this file is contributing to real and serious consequences for people and communities affected by racism,” said Alberta Party MLA Greg Clark.
“We only need to look at today’s disturbing video or the troubling attitudes on display at a recent Red Deer policy conference to see this is a serious problem that isn’t going away.”
Alberta Party MLA Karen McPherson emphasized that while we all have a part to play in standing up to intolerance, the government has an important leadership role to play in setting an example to all Albertans.
“The Premier showed some leadership last year by asking the minister of education to look at strategies for combatting racism, but where is the follow through?”
“Racism and intolerance are issues faced by Albertans every single day. The fact this government has delayed the release of their promised report makes me question how committed they are to standing with those Albertans.”
