February 5, 2019 (Calgary) – Citing the numerous and complex investigations that the Election Commissioner is currently undertaking, and with an election call expected in the next few months, Alberta Party MLA Greg Clark is questioning whether the Commissioners office has the resources it needs.
“I have written to MLA Shepherd asking that the Standing Committee on Legislative Offices review the budget allocation for the Election Commissioner, both for this fiscal year as well as the next fiscal year.”
“The commissioner is currently dealing with a number of investigations into possible misconduct, and my concern is that the number and complexity of these investigations could be taxing the limited resources they have available.”
MLA Clark also noted that with an election expected in the next few months, it is important to ensure that the commissioner is able to deliver on his mandate.
“It is incredibly important that Albertans are able to trust the integrity of the democratic process, and properly funding the office of the Election Commissioner is part of ensuring that trust.”
“I hope that MLA Shepherd recognizes the seriousness of this issue, and is willing to work with me and the Legislative Offices committee to make sure that the Elections Commissioner is properly empowered to do their job.”
