The Alberta Party Caucus was saddened to hear of the passing earlier today of former Speaker Gene Zwozdesky.
Gene, or Zwoz as he was affectionately known, will be remembered by caucus as an honourable man who will be truly missed.
“I had the privilege of working with him at the Legislature when he was first elected in 1993, and reconnected when he helped 70+ rookie MLAs learn the ropes in 2015,” said Greg Clark, MLA for Calgary-Elbow.
“I met Gene when we were elected in 2015, and making the transition from one government to another. I found him to be very kind and quite funny. He made the transition easier, and helped things make sense when everything was new to me. He cared about his job and his role, and he wasn’t partisan about it,” said Karen McPherson, MLA for Calgary-Mackay-Nose Hill.
“l’m sad today to lose a friend and mentor. Gene was the ultimate statesman. Without his guidance I would not be the MLA I am today, and for that I will be forever grateful. I hope his family finds peace during this difficult time,” said Rick Fraser, MLA for Calgary-South East.
